About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation services, remand prisons, and client transport.
Description
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service Region Mid has operations in Södermanland, Västmanland, Uppland, Värmland, and Närke. The Probation Service Mälardalen area consists of probation offices in Eskilstuna, Nyköping, Västerås, and Uppsala. We are now looking for probation officers to be based in Eskilstuna, where the probation office is centrally located and covers the municipalities of Eskilstuna and Strängnäs.
Job Description
The main tasks involve planning, leading, developing, and following up on program activities in collaboration with other probation officers and colleagues in the program team.
As a crucial part of working to prevent recidivism and adhering to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's vision "Better Out," extensive program activities are conducted for clients both in groups and individually. Treatment programs are largely manual-guided, but there are also flexible programs. These are conducted with high quality and according to the principles of evidence-based practice. They are primarily based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and social learning theory. To deliver treatment programs, you will receive internal training and undergo certification processes to be qualified to conduct the relevant treatment programs.
As a probation officer, you are responsible for clients released on parole and clients sentenced to probation supervision. The Probation Service is also responsible for intensive supervision with electronic monitoring (ankle bracelets) and community service. Work within the Probation Service consists largely of investigative work, conducting risk and needs assessments, and preparing plans for enforcement.
As a probation officer, you actively participate in influence work directed at clients, including structured conversations based on CBT, motivating participation in program activities, and assisting in release preparations for clients admitted to prison. Duties also include conducting background investigations, submitting statements to the court, and proposing appropriate sanctions.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who is secure, stable, and has good self-awareness. You have a good understanding of how people acquire knowledge and adapt your communication style according to the recipient's prerequisites. In your professional practice, you demonstrate sound judgment and integrity. As a probation officer, you need to have good collaboration skills and be able to communicate clearly, as well as plan, organize, and prioritize work efficiently. You must also have a physical condition that allows you to act physically if the situation requires it.
To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans are capable of development. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute through your attitude to ensuring that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
We are looking for someone who has:
- An academic degree (at least bachelor's level), preferably in social work, behavioral science, or social sciences, or another academic degree combined with experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant.
- Good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written.
- Current experience in client-facing work within healthcare and treatment or social work.
- A valid driver's license (Category B).
The following are also meritorious:
- Training in treatment programs within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service that are deemed relevant.
- Current and well-regarded work experience within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare and care work.
- Current experience working within the Probation Service operations of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.
- Experience in social treatment work.
- Current experience working with CBT-based interventions.
- Relevant language skills.
